Starting Therapy for the First Time: What to Expect

March 25, 2025/in Addiction Treatment, Adolescence, Anxiety, child therapy, Creativity, depression, Louisville Health and Healing News, Mental Health, Recovery, stress/by Louisville Health and Healing

Taking the step to begin therapy for the first time can feel both empowering and intimidating. Whether you’re seeking support for anxiety, depression, trauma, or personal growth, therapy can be a valuable tool for self-discovery and healing. Here’s what you can expect when beginning your therapy journey.

Choosing the Right Therapist

Finding a therapist who aligns with your needs is an important first step. Consider factors such as:

  • Specialization: Does the therapist have experience with your specific concerns?
  • Therapeutic Approach: Different modalities, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) or psychodynamic therapy, offer various ways to explore your thoughts and emotions.
  • Comfort Level: Feeling safe and understood is key to a productive therapy experience.

What Happens in Your First Session?

Your first session is typically an introduction where you and your therapist get to know each other. You may discuss:

  • Your reasons for seeking therapy
  • Your personal history and background
  • Your goals and what you hope to achieve
  • How the therapist works and their approach to treatment

It’s normal to feel nervous, but remember that therapy is a judgment-free space designed to support you.

Common Myths About Therapy

  • “Therapy is only for people with serious problems.” Therapy is beneficial for anyone looking to improve their mental well-being, not just those in crisis.
  • “The therapist will tell me what to do.” Therapists provide guidance and support, but ultimately, you are in control of your own growth.
  • “Talking about my problems will make them worse.” While discussing difficult emotions may feel uncomfortable at first, therapy helps you process them in a healthy way.

Making the Most of Therapy

To get the best results from therapy:

  • Be open and honest about your thoughts and feelings.
  • Practice patience—growth takes time.
  • Engage in self-reflection between sessions.
  • Trust the process and allow yourself to be vulnerable.

Taking the Next Step

Starting therapy is an act of courage and self-care. At Louisville Health & Healing, we provide a safe and supportive environment to help you navigate your mental health journey. If you’re ready to take the first step, reach out today to schedule your first session.

Healing begins with the decision to seek support.

The Effectiveness of EMDR Therapy

March 10, 2025/in Addiction Treatment, Adolescence, Anxiety, depression, Louisville Health and Healing News, Mental Health, Recovery/by Louisville Health and Healing

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a highly effective, evidence-based therapy designed to help individuals process traumatic experiences and reduce emotional distress. Since its development by Dr. Francine Shapiro in the late 1980s, EMDR has been widely used to treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, depression, and other mental health conditions.

How Does EMDR Work?

EMDR therapy involves a structured approach where individuals recall distressing memories while engaging in bilateral stimulation, typically through guided eye movements, taps, or sounds. This process helps the brain reprocess traumatic memories, making them less emotionally overwhelming.

Research and Effectiveness

Numerous studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of EMDR therapy, particularly for trauma-related disorders:

  • The American Psychological Association (APA) and World Health Organization (WHO) recognize EMDR as an effective treatment for PTSD.
  • Research shows that EMDR can significantly reduce PTSD symptoms in fewer sessions compared to traditional talk therapy.
  • Studies indicate that EMDR is as effective as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) but often requires fewer sessions.
  • EMDR has been found to improve emotional regulation, reduce anxiety, and enhance overall well-being.

Benefits of EMDR Therapy

  • Fast and Efficient: Many individuals experience symptom relief in a shorter time compared to other therapies.
  • Minimal Verbal Processing: Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR does not require extensive discussion of traumatic events.
  • Lasting Results: Once traumatic memories are reprocessed, symptoms often do not return.
  • Versatile Application: Effective for PTSD, phobias, panic disorders, depression, and even chronic pain.

Is EMDR Right for You?

If you struggle with trauma, anxiety, or persistent negative beliefs, EMDR may be a beneficial treatment option. At Louisville Health & Healing, our trained EMDR therapists are here to help you navigate the healing process. Contact us today to learn more about how EMDR can support your mental wellness journey.

Healing is possible, and EMDR can help you move forward.

Navigating Therapy Costs: Using Insurance vs. Private Pay

March 19, 2024/in Addiction Treatment, Adolescence, Anxiety, child therapy, Creativity, depression/by Louisville Health and Healing

Seeking therapy is a significant step toward prioritizing your mental health and well-being. However, the financial aspect of therapy can be a concern for many individuals. Fortunately, there are options available to help offset the cost of therapy, including using insurance or paying out of pocket (private pay). In this blog post, we’ll explore how to use insurance for therapy, compare the benefits of using insurance versus private pay, and offer insights to help you make an informed decision.

Using Insurance for Therapy:

Check Your Coverage:
Before scheduling a therapy session, it’s essential to review your insurance policy to understand what mental health services are covered. Contact your insurance provider or check their website to find out about your mental health benefits, including copayments, deductibles, and coverage limits.

Find an In-Network Provider:
Insurance companies typically have a network of providers with whom they have negotiated rates. To maximize your benefits and minimize out-of-pocket costs, look for therapists who are in-network with your insurance plan. You can usually find a list of in-network providers on your insurance company’s website or by calling their customer service hotline.

Obtain Prior Authorization if Necessary:
Some insurance plans require prior authorization for mental health services. This means you’ll need approval from your insurance company before starting therapy. Your therapist can help you navigate the authorization process and provide any necessary documentation to facilitate approval.

Understand Your Financial Responsibility:
Even if you have insurance coverage for therapy, you may still be responsible for certain costs, such as copayments, coinsurance, or deductibles. Be sure to clarify your financial responsibility with your therapist and insurance provider to avoid unexpected expenses.

Benefits of Using Insurance for Therapy:

Cost Savings:
One of the primary benefits of using insurance for therapy is cost savings. Insurance coverage can significantly reduce the out-of-pocket expenses associated with therapy, making it more affordable and accessible for many individuals.

Access to a Wide Network of Providers:
Insurance plans often have a network of providers, giving you access to a diverse range of therapists with different specialties and expertise. This can increase your chances of finding a therapist who meets your specific needs and preferences.

Financial Protection:
Insurance provides a layer of financial protection in case of unexpected or catastrophic events. If you experience a sudden illness or crisis that requires intensive therapy or hospitalization, insurance can help cover the costs and alleviate the financial burden on you and your family.

Private Pay for Therapy:

No Insurance Restrictions:
When paying out of pocket for therapy, you have the freedom to choose any therapist you want, regardless of whether they are in-network with your insurance plan. This can be advantageous if you prefer to work with a therapist who specializes in a particular approach or has specific qualifications.

Greater Privacy and Confidentiality:
Private pay clients often enjoy greater privacy and confidentiality compared to those using insurance. Because insurance companies require documentation and may request information about your treatment, paying privately can help you maintain greater control over your personal information.

Flexibility in Treatment Options:
Private pay therapy offers flexibility in treatment options, such as the frequency and duration of sessions, as well as the types of therapy offered. You and your therapist can collaboratively decide on the most effective treatment plan without being constrained by insurance regulations or limitations.

Choosing between using insurance and private pay for therapy depends on your individual circumstances, preferences, and financial considerations. While insurance can provide cost savings and access to a wide network of providers, private pay offers greater flexibility, privacy, and control over your treatment. Ultimately, the most important factor is finding a therapist who is a good fit for your needs and who can help you achieve your therapy goals, whether you choose to use insurance or pay privately. By weighing the benefits and considerations of each option, you can make an informed decision that supports your journey toward mental health and well-being.

We accept all insurances and have private pay and sliding scale options.

What is art therapy?

April 19, 2022/0 Comments/in Addiction Treatment, Adolescence, Anxiety, art therapy, depression, Louisville Health and Healing News, Mental Health, Psychedelic Support, Recovery, Spirituality/by Louisville Health and Healing

Art therapy is a true gift to the service of healing and does not require any artistic skill whatsoever; art therapy focuses on the process, not the product. The quality of a client’s art is not the focus, as the experiences and insight gained through the exercise is what informs progress.

Art therapy has been proven to be an extremely effective modality for individuals of all ages, with varying presenting issues. Some issues that art therapy works to treat include, but are not limited to, those actively processing trauma, behavioral/emotional issues, anger/aggression, addiction, grief/loss, depression, anxiety, and ADHD. A major benefit to this expressive modality is that it will often elicit responses that have been challenging to obtain independently or through other therapeutic techniques. An art therapy session can look many different ways. Whether it be painting, wood-working, drawing, sculpting, or any other media used, the creative process offers new perspectives and catharsis that can be paramount to an individual’s treatment.

We have a licensed art therapist that works with children, teens and adults. If your tired of traditional talk therapy, then give art therapy a try! Reach out today. 502.208.9927; [email protected] .

Letter to Parents

March 15, 2021/0 Comments/in Adolescence, Louisville Health and Healing News, Mental Health/by Louisville Health and Healing

The Following is a letter to parents. I think it is important to honor and acknowledge those that are raising children during this pandemic.

Dear Parents and Caregivers of children,

Did you imagine that life would be what it is today? I mean a year later and you’re still here!! The sacrifices you’ve made for your children have been incredible. The hell that you have gone through and you’ve put your children first. I know it’s been hard. As a parent myself, it has been challenging in many different ways. Canceled vacations, constantly being hypervigilant about the virus, social injustice and the recent political climate, homeschooling children with very little support and instruction—these are some the challenges that you’ve encountered and endured. Yes, endured. Because you’re still here.

It’s been confusing at times. Are we wearing one mask or two? Are my children’s teachers being vaccinated? Is it really safe to return to school? Can they play with their friends? WHEN. WILL. THINGS. BE. NORMAL. AGAIN. You are the real heroes. Thank you for working from home to make sure your kids have what they need. Thank you for quitting a job to stay at home. Thank you for holding space for your kids and knowing that they are struggling and don’t know how to articulate their struggles. Thanks for giving them a break when they have been frustrated, overwhelmed and desperate for connection. You have been gracious at times and overwhelmed yourself and yet, have endured. At times you may have wanted to give up and maybe you have in your own way and…you are still here.

The phrase, “we are all doing the best we can”, as pissed as that may make you, is true. And…you are still here. You have been caught in the middle of many things in the last year and you made sure to provide and support your kids in the best way possible. The tearful nights, the frustrations, the confusion, the anxiety, just know that it’s all good. You have may have regrets about how you’ve conducted yourself or have talked to your children at times and it’s okay. You’re still here. When your children grow in age and understanding they will see that what you have done was incredibly challenging. Just know that as humans we make mistake and may have regrets but there is an opportunity for growth in all our experiences.

More vaccinations, the recent stimulus bill being passed, children returning to school for a few weeks before summer break can offer hope and maybe even a respite from what life has been in the last year. My hope is that you find ways to practice grace and to take care of yourself.

Sincerely and with grace and love,

Louisville Health & Healing

Back to School (Part 2) College Edition

August 7, 2018/0 Comments/in Adolescence, Mental Health/by Louisville Health and Healing

Okay. This blog is dedicated to college kids (or anyone interested in reading it). College can be a very fun and exciting endeavor. For some young adults, this may be the first time they are out of their parent’s house. For others, this could seem like the first true adult experience. However, sometimes college is not always what it’s cracked up to be. College requires responsibility, accountability, time management, and some basic social skills. Achieving these standards can be challenging for a young adult for many reasons.

When I think of college I immediately associate partying (could be my past). A lot of college students experience parties for the first time in college. Keep in mind, I want you to have fun! Here are some things to be mindful of when you party in college (or anywhere really):

  • Never drink and drive or use any substance and drive even marijuana (our body metabolizes 1 oz. of alcohol per hour and any more than that is usually over the limit and can lead to intoxication. Marijuana does impair judgment)
  • Call a cab, Uber or Lyft (if you have a designated driver, please make sure you’re not getting in the car with them if they drink)
  • Don’t leave your drink unattended at a party/bar/pub (if you sit it down, then consider it a ‘dead’ drink and don’t drink it. Someone could put drugs in your drink)
  • For Women, don’t walk or travel home alone intoxicated or not
  • Binge drinking has led to death (Binge drinking is drinking 5-6 drinks in a 3-hour period. This kind of drinking surprises the body and can lead to some health risks)
  • If you are using ‘party drugs’ make sure you know what you’re taking (I’m not stupid to think that college kids don’t use or abuse drugs other than alcohol)
  • Be careful mixing alcohol with energy drinks and other substances (alcohol is a depressant and energy drinks are considered a stimulant. These combinations have led to death).
  • Have access to emergency responders if needed

College students can also suffer from a wide array of issues:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Alcohol and substance use/abuse
  • Overwhelming stress as a result of expectations
  • Eating disorders (i.e. Anorexia and bulimia)
  • Feeling ashamed, lost, and scared of being away from family and support
  • Sexual Transmitted Illness as a result of high-risk sexual behaviors with multiple partners
  • Poor self-confidence and low self-esteem

If you experience any of these issues please reach out to family and other support. Sometimes meeting with a therapist can be helpful in processing life events!

CHEERS!! And good luck with your academic success…
